Shimukappuvillege, Hokkaido, 100% Maple Syrup ~Topeniwakka~

$46

Shimukappu village in Hokkaido is a small village with a population of about 1,200 people. With an area which is almost as large as Tokyo’s 23 districts, of which 94% is forested, it is often said that this is a ‘small village in a big forest.’

Topeniwakka is a maple syrup made by thoroughly boiling down sap from Yellow-paint Maple trees which are the emblem of Shimukappu village. The maple sap can actually only be collected during one month from March to April.

It is made by burning firewood using timber from forest thinning and which is then boiled down for a long time with a handmade boiler. From 60 liters of sap only a mere 1 liter of maple syrup can be made. It is a valuable bounty of the forest born from practical use of the forest’s resources.

You will love the smooth sweetness of Shimukappu village’s 100% maple syrup; it has a taste that you won’t find anywhere else!

Gourmet's Comments

It is a product that is chock-full with special feelings, like how it is made in Japan, is sold in few places; it is restricted in number and includes a serial number. The wrapping is also good. (Manufacturing Industry - Secretary - 6 years, 11 months)

It is a great topic of conversation to have a maple syrup made in Japan. I think the rarity value is quite high so the price makes sense. As the box has a premium feeling I would definitely use this as a gift for older people. (Wholesale, Retailer - Secretary - 4 months)

It is quite unlike normal maple syrup as it has a very mellow taste. I think it is a really rare product as, for example, this year only 500 bottles were produced. The bottle and gift box have a lovely luxurious feeling. (Consultant/Accounting/Law - Secretary - 7 years and 6 months)
